Thomas Elwood Poplin Sr.




Thomas Elwood Poplin Sr, 83, of Worthington, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. Tom was born February 25, 1940, in Chattaroy, West Virginia, a son of the late Foster and Gertrude Anna Harris Poplin.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Edith Dorothy Robinson Poplin and two daughters Diana Hay and Deann Hay; and three brothers Paul Poplin, Rocky Poplin, Delmas “Bud” Poplin; one sister Pat Walker.


Tom was a retired operator with the Corp. of Engineers where he worked for Greenup Locks and Dam. He attended Argillite Nazarene Church and was a United States Navy Veteran where he was a former Chief Petty Officer. He was very proud to serve honorably for 20 years. He spent a lot of time working on the flight deck and did many deployments on aircraft carrier USS Independence, where he was an air crewman for 10 years. Tom was a very humble and kind man who loved his family dearly.


He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years Janet Blevins Poplin; a son Thomas (Bev) Poplin Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three brothers David Poplin of Argillite, Kentucky, Darrell Poplin of Greenup, Kentucky and Butch Poplin of Catlettsburg, Kentucky; a sister Barbara Gay of Greenup, Kentucky; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.


Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday, May 5, 2023, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Bro. Lloyd Baldridge. Burial will be in the Poynter Cemetery in Argillite, Kentucky. Military rites will be performed by LT Colonel Vance Houston Marine League Detachment 1345. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Thursday and one hour before the service on Friday.
