John William Whobrey, 84, of Greenup, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2025, at his home.

John was born on March 25, 1940, in Olaton, Kentucky, a son of the late James Ellis Whobrey and Elsie Dever Whobrey Basham. He was a 1958 graduate of Hartford High School in Ohio County, Kentucky, and a United States Air Force Veteran, serving from 1958 to 1961. He always felt it was a great honor and had many fond memories of his service.

John was a warm and caring person who loved to tell stories, many of which were filled with one-liners. He adored his dog "Angel," and when she was alive, he would take her for walks every day. People may not have known John's name, but they sure knew "Angel's." He enjoyed playing the horses and watching the Kentucky Derby.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Louise Miller, and two brothers, James Whobrey and Frankie Whobrey.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Norma Jewell Scaggs Whobrey. She lost the man she had been with on the path of life for over 50 years and will miss him dearly. He is also survived by a son, Mark (Amber) Miller of Kalispell, Montana; two grandchildren, Tyler (Elle) Miller and Daniel (Laura) Miller; a sister, Linda Gossett of Owensboro, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East by Edward Scaggs. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post 93, Kenova, West Virginia. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to STAR - Saving The Animals of Rowan at PO Box 454 Morehead, Kentucky 40351 OR Sierra's Haven Animal Rescue at 80 Easter Drive Portsmouth, Ohio 45662.
