Alvin Wayne Carpenter Sr.


Alvin Wayne Carpenter Sr., 85, of Wurtland, Kentucky went to be with the Lord, Thursday, June 4, 2020 at King’s Daughters’ Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky. Wayne was born December 6, 1934 in Hopewell, Kentucky a son of the late John and Nannie Bush Carpenter. Wayne was a member and deacon of the Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired carman / foreman with CSX Railroad with 42 years of service. He was an avid fisherman, deer hunter, and gardner. He also enjoyed woodworking and tinkering on lawnmowers. He was a Kentucky colonel and was given the key to the City of Wurtland for his community service in which he also was a founding member of the the City of Wurtland.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara Virgin; five brothers Ernest, Ercel, Elmer, John Jr. and Carl Carpenter; one sister Jane Adkins and one great-granddaughter Daryl Shey Valandingham.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Clara Claxon Carpenter; four sons Alvin (Debra) Carpenter of Pedro, Ohio, David (Gail) Carpenter of Kitts Hill, Ohio, John (Linda) Carpenter of Waterloo, Ohio and Tim (Linda) Stephens of Flatwoods, Kentucky; two daughters Lou Anne (Mark) Capper of Willow Wood, Ohio and Lynn (Rick) Burnett of Oldtown, Kentucky; one sister Lucy Harlow of Russell, Kentucky; thirteen grandchildren Ryan (Terri) Carpenter, Trent (Johnda) Carpenter, Brad (Dustee) Carpenter, Derek (Amanda) Carpenter, Dylan Carpenter, Jonda Carpenter, Michelle (Steve) Smith, Chris (Emily) Capper, Rebecca (Daniel) Bennett, Andrew (Amber) Stephens, Rikki (Erick) Kleinhelter, Wesley (Erica) Stephens and a special grandson and caregiver Josh Stephens; nineteen great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and friends who will miss him greatly.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Monday, June 8, 2020 at Reed Funeral Home in by Pastor J.R. Gullett and Bro. Marvin Boggs. Burial will be in the Oldtown Cemetery in Oldtown. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until service on Monday at the funeral home.
