Lois Wells Garthee


Lois Wells Garthee, 89, of Lloyd, Kentucky went home to be with the Lord and Savior on May 4, 2020. She peacefully passed at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Lois was born June 14, 1930 in Lloyd, Kentucky a daughter of the late Russell and Georgie Burchett Wells. She was a former employee of First and Peoples Bank in Greenup and South Shore. She also served many years as Deputy Clerk of the Greenup County Circuit Clerk’s Office from where she retired. She often spoke of her first and favorite job as a schoolteacher in a one room schoolhouse at the age of 20. The school was located over the hill from her family farm where she was able to walk to along with her students. She shared many memorable stories of this adventure.

She was an avid storyteller that mainly related to her humorous mishaps. She will be fondly remembered for her quick-witted sayings. She loved to laugh and loved people. She believed in public service and was always willing to help. She was a member of Brick Union Christian Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, and taking care of her family. She was also a devoted University of Kentucky sports fan following the teams across the country.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Cleo Garthee and one sister, Peggy Wells Antis.

She is survived by two daughters, Lee Ann Wireman and Beth (Matthew) Grant; two brothers Ray (Charlotte) Wells and David Wells; six grandchildren Jon (Caryn) Wireman, Amy (Robbie) West, Sara (Chad) Hensley, Shelby (Eric) Craft, Madison Grant, and Lily Grant; four great grandchildren Raegan West, Elizabeth Hensley, Aaron Wireman, and Avery Wireman; and a host of nieces and nephews who will all greatly miss her.

The family would like to give thanks to all her hospice nurses and aides that took such good care of her and a special thanks to Lora Darnell Lands for all of her loving care she provided for Lois.

A private graveside service will be held at Brick Union Cemetery by Keith Antis. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Lois Garthee to Greenup Meals on Wheels. Reed Funeral Home in Greenup, Kentucky has been entrusted with the services. Condolences can be made at rlrfuneralhome.com.
