Donald A. Liles

1934 – 2016

Donald Andrew Liles, a faithful servant of the Lord, 81, of Greenup, Kentucky came to the end of his life’s journey on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at King’s Daughters’ Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky. Mr. Liles was born on December 12, 1934 in Beebe, Arkansas to the late Sidney Andrew and Elvira Newsom Liles.

Donald was a 1953 graduate of Griffithsville High School in Arkansas and a graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College where he received his Bachelor degree in mathematics with a minor in physics and chemistry. Upon graduation, he worked as an engineer for the Arkansas Highway Department in Little Rock. In 1960 he moved to Kentucky and began his career in Education with the Greenup County School system, eventually returning to school, earning his Master’s degree, Rank I from Morehead State University. He taught at the former Wurtland High School, served as an Assistant Principal at Greenup County High School, Principal at the former Oldtown Elementary School and ended his 31 year career in Education as the Principal of Greenup County High School. In addition to his service with the public school system, he taught classes at Ashland Community College for 13 years and was instrumental in starting the Greenup County Adult Education Program, helping individuals earn their GED. After retirement, Mr. Liles spent his time as a volunteer with the AARP, providing tax assistance to those in need, worked as a member of the 2000 Census team and helped to collect money to purchase clothes and necessary items for those less fortunate. Donald served as an elder at the Greenup Christian Church for 35 years before moving his membership to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Ohio.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by:

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Judith Ann Thornsbury Liles

Donald will be greatly missed by family, friends and all that knew him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Monday February 29, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Ohio by Father Adam Streitenberger and Father David Huffman. Burial will be held at Brick Union Cemetery in Lloyd, Kentucky.

Visitation is 6:00pm-9:00pm on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup, Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Mercy Meals Program, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 524 6th Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662.
